All We Know

Sheffield graffiti – artist unknown

All We Know

That she hummed between us, grey and papery,
ready to burst,

that she was swaddled with gauze turned grubby
from other people’s hands,

that she had been passed round like a loaf of bread
gone stale and hard,

that we had to thicken her milk to get her to suck,
that she grew teeth before she grew hair,

that when we tried to rock her to sleep
she made our arms ache, though she never gained weight,

that she was full of stings.
